The Last One Standing_ Giving Pulse to A Global Band_
Chapter 1: The Contestants_ The IP Contestants Mansion Los Angeles, USA July 28, 2003 11:00am
Back in May of 2003, the American reality competition American Juniors became a big hit with the ratings. The show was made to form a band that would give S Club 8 American fans. The show’s creator, Simon Fuller, decided to do a global, young adult version of American Juniors combined with a band-forming franchise Popstars, International Popstars. This band would be a 7-piece band that sing S Club songs. The contestants in this search must be 16-22, and they must know English. Now it’s the end of July, and the auditions are fully over. There are 40 contestants (20 guys and 20 girls) from 40 countries. They all moved to a mansion in Los Angeles, pretty much confirming that this band will be American-based. When the producers (with their translators) were finished talking to the contestants, the people scattered to get their rooms. One blonde girl tripped on the stairs as she was running up. A brunette guy caught her. Girl: (American accent) “Thanks.” Guy: (British accent) “Sure.” Girl: “You’re British?” Guy: “Yea, I am. I’m Nathan.” Girl: “I’m Hannah. What part of England do you live in?” Nathan: “London. You?” Hannah: (nervously) “Um, it’s a small town, you’ll probably think I live in the middle of nowhere.” Nathan: “There are villages in England, and I’m pretty sure I don’t them. So try me.” Hannah: “Blytheville. It‘s in the Bible Belt area of America.” Nathan: “It’s very conservative, isn’t it?” Hannah: “Yeah.” Nathan: (laughing) “I’ve met a few ultra-conservative and they were extremely judgemental. Are you like that?” Hannah: (laughing) “No, I actually want to get away from that.” Nathan: “I gotta get my room. Do you wanna talk later?” Hannah: “Sure.” As Nathan left, Hannah grinned. When she got her room, she continued grinning. Another girl was in the room at the time. She noticed the Hannah, so she put her cell phone down. Girl #2: (Israeli accent/snooty tone) “Erm, why are you grinning so much?” Hannah: “Oh sorry, I was just talking to a really cute guy. I’m Hannah.” Girl #2: “I’m Sarah Cohen, and I’m from Israel. My parents are the most well-known lawyers in Israel. So if I join this international band, my parents will be the band’s lawyers.” Hannah: “So are you, like, Paris Hilton?” Sarah: “No, I don’t do sex tapes.” Hannah: (nervously) “I’m from America, and that’s it.” Sarah nodded her head. Sarah: (yelling in her cell phone in Hebrew-English translation) “GET MY BAGS IN HERE, LIKE, NOW!!!” Hannah didn’t know what she said. Just then, another girl came in carrying a suitcase. Sarah: (demanding-English translation) “You’re not my maid!” Girl #3: (speaking in German) “Was?” Sarah: (speaking in English) “Was what? You don’t make sense, so go sense yourself.” Girl #3: (German accent) “Me Jeanette. Me no English. Ich komme aus Deutschland...um, me from Deutschland.” Sarah: “Dutch-Land? You speak German, and you’re from Netherlands?” Hannah: “No, she’s from Germany, not the Netherlands.” Sarah: “Oooh, that makes sense. Jeanette, go make your English better. You don’t make sense when you speak.” Hannah: “Sarah, you don’t make much sense either.” Sarah: “Everyone says I’m ditsy. I don’t know why.” Jeanette: “Room…ache-u-pie?” With that, Sarah and Hannah looked at each other.
At the same time, Nathan entered a room that had another guy. This guy was unpacking. Nathan: “Can I room here?” Guy #2: (Russian accent) “Da.” Nathan: “What’s ‘da’?” Guy #2: “It’s Russian for ‘yes’. I’m Dmitry, and I’m a dancing male model.” Dmitry gave a smug. Nathan: (nervously) “Erm, I’m not that impressive. I’m just a college student that just got my degree in music. So really, I’m not that special.” Dmitry: (snooty tone) “Hmm, I can see that your clothes aren’t designer. It’s like something you bought from a grocery store.” Nathan’s eyes opened wide. Nathan: (nervously) “Erm, I’m not like that. I had a girlfriend before I left for Los Angeles.” Dmitry: (irritated) “You though I was gay, didn’t you?” Nathan stammered. Dmitry: (angrily) “I’m straight!” Nathan: (nervously) “G-Good to know.” Just then, another guy came in the room. Guy #3: (Mexican accent) “Hi, can I room with ya’ll? I‘m Jorge.” Dmitry: “I’m Dmitry Vladimir! I’m from Russia! I’m 21! I’m a male model and choreographer! And I’m straight!” With that, Dmitry stormed out. Jorge: (nervously) “Um, should I leave or what?” Nathan: “No, stay. I need a sane person here.”
In another room, a girl from South Africa entered a room that already had a girl. This girl was lying on a bed with her hand on her head. South African Girl: (South African accent) “Erm, is this room taken?” Girl #4: (Australian accent) “Erm, no you can stay. I just have a hangover.” South African Girl: “Ok. I’m Cheryl.” Girl #4: “I’m Emma. Do you like to party?” Cheryl: “Not really. I’m more kept to myself really.” Emma: “That’s no fun.” Cheryl: “So getting a hangover’s fun?” Emma: “Hmm, kinda.” These are the Top 40 Contestants on International Popstars

Chapter 2: Meet and Greet_ The IP Contestants Mansion Los Angeles, USA July 28, 2003 10:00pm
Later that night, the Top 40 Contestants were given a meet-and-greet party. At the bar, Dmitry was boasting about his budding dance career and being a male model in Eastern Europe and Central Asia to his roommates. Dmitry: “And I’ve been working in dance company in Moscow that focuses on commercial dancing and giving dancers creative freedom. Oh, and I‘ve recently did some modeling projects in Kazakhstan, which by the way, I‘m part-Kazakh.” As Dmitry kept talking, he saw Sarah talking with Hannah. He couldn’t stop staring at Sarah. Dmitry: “Uh, we’re talk later.” He came up to Sarah. Dmitry: (smiling) “Hi, I’m Dmitry.” Sarah: (smiling) “Hi, I’m Sarah.” Dmitry: (smugly) “I’m from Russia and I’m a dancer, choreographer, and a well-known male model in Europe and Asia.” Sarah: (irritated/smugly) “Well, I’m from Israel and I’m also a choreographer and I was a back-up dancer for Britney Spears.” Dmitry: “Like, OMG, you danced for Britney Spears?!” Sarah: “Yeah, and I was even a back-up singer for her.” Hannah: “Okay, now my life is really boring.” Dmitry: “I can’t believe you toured for Britney Spears!” Sarah: “Yeah, and I maybe I can hook you up with one the dancers.” Dmitry: “Like you?” Sarah and Hannah looked at each other. Sarah: (surprised) “You’re straight?” Dmitry: “Yeah. You thought I was gay?” Sarah: “You were the one who kept talking about Britney. Besides, I had a huge break up with my boyfriend a few weeks ago. So, I‘m not interested in you.” With that, Dmitry stormed off. Hannah: “If he’s not gay, then what is he?” Sarah: “He’s a metrosexual.” Hannah: “What’s that?” Sarah: (shocked) “Um, you live in America, and you don’t know what a metro-boy is?” Hannah: “I lived in a ultra-conservative town. What do you expect?” Sarah: “You mean ultra-Christian?” Hannah: “I’m Christian, but not like that.” Sarah: “A metro-boy is straight guy who acts like he’s gay but he likes only girls. Dmitry is that. He is kinda cute.” Hannah: “You like metro-boys?” Sarah: “They’re the only boys I’ve ever dated. I’ve dated a few normal guys and one bi-guy.” Hannah: “So, go ask him out.” Sarah: “Like I told him, I’m not ready to date again. Besides, I brushed him off.” Just then, Jeanette came to their table. Jeanette: “Me join?” Sarah: “Nein.” Hannah: “You know German?” Sarah: “Just that word.” So Jeanette left sadly. As she was heading to the bar, she bumped into Austrian contestant Sean. (The following conversation is in German. This is the English translation.) Jeanette: (smiling) “Oh sorry. I wasn’t looking.” Sean: “It’s ok. At least I wasn’t holding a drink. I’m Sean.” Jeanette: “I’m Jeanette. I’m from Germany, and I can tell you‘re from Austria.” Sean: (laughing) “You got it.” At the same time, Nathan came up to Hannah. Nathan: “Hey Hannah. Who’s your friend?” Sarah: “I’m Sarah. So Hannah, this is the cute guy you were talking about?” Hannah blushed while Nathan laughed. Hannah: (nervously) “Yeah. This is Nathan.” Nathan: “Hannah, you think I’m cute?” Hannah: “Cuter and nicer than Simon Cowell.” Nathan: (laughing) “True.” With that, Nathan and Hannah stared into each others’ eyes. They were at it for five minutes. Sarah: (annoyed) “You two need to kiss.” Nathan and Hannah laughed.
A few hours later, the party continued. Some of the contestants who were of legal age to drink (it’s 21 in USA) were drunk. But Emma was the most drunk. Jorge watched her. He couldn’t help but feel sorry for her. Cheryl was sitting next to him. Jorge: “Cheryl, who’s she?” Cheryl: “Emma. That Aussie parties too hard, if you ask me.” Jorge: (thinking) “Emma is wasting her dreams just to party.”
